ACADEMY AWARDS THIS SUNDAY

Have we stockpiled the nacho's, dip, and drinks for this Sunday. No, this posting is not late for the Superbowl (which we don't celebrate unless Denver is playing)--
it's for this Sunday night and the Academy Awards.
I am such a movie fan especially of the 40's 50's. It starts to selectively thin out after I married and had less time but I still love movies and never miss the Awards. This is the 80th year of the Awards but the first one televised was 1953 and Bob Hope was the M.C. Drum roll please--- the winner for Best Picture that year was "The Greatest Show on Earth". Cecil B. DeMille had directed so many bibical movies, some since the early 20's but wouldn't you know it, he won his only directing Oscar for a Circus Movie.
In the mid 80's when downtown Salt Lake was well into it's dying mode, the last single large theatre, "The Centre Theatre" on 3rd South and State announced it's closing. They were having a closing ceremony and were showing "The Greatest Show on Earth". Wendell was out of town on a business trip and so I got all dressed up and went down to pay homage. The balcony was roped off and everyone was suppose to sit on the main level. I got my apple juice (in an embossed champagne glass) and took a quick look around and slipped under the rope and up the stairs. I sat center, front row in the empty balcony and reminisced about how bad I wanted to be Betty Hutton when I was 10 years old. I still have the commorative glass's from that night. Just a note to our kids-- don't throw them away, if you don't want them, put'em on eBay.

O.K. I get the message-- I need to do something else a little more constructive today than sit at the computer.
I just remembered Andi tagged "everybody" on her blog so I'm going to try and do it.

10 Years ago today I was: Can't do 10 years ago because that part of my journal was permanently lost when I hit something on the keyboard and it vanished. Didn't find out what "ctrl Z" was for until a couple of years later. But I can do 8 1/2 years ago.
Wendell was getting ready to retire and I gave up the "Berry" business and got ready to retire. Aug. 9th 99, Nick lost his first tooth, Aug. 14, 99, Abby broke her arm on neighbors trampoline and Aug. 11, 99 several people in our family were in the tornado in downtown Salt Lake. Actually thought about taking my camera with me to lunch downtown with Wendell that day and didn't. go figure.

5 Things on my "to do" list today: This will have to be list for tomorrow because it's 11 p.m. right now.
1. Get up before 10:30 a.m.
2. Remember to drink vitamin drink
3. Walk on Beach
4. Read book
5. Check Blog and see if anyone left a comment

Thing I would do If I became a Billionaire
Give all our children lots of money- not sure how much yet.
Hire a full time really good massage person to live at my house.
Buy an apartment in New York
Buy a lifetime business class pass on Delta (not sure if they have these)
Rethink my priority's and give most of it to "Room to Read"

I sometimes hit the send key and then wish I hadn't.

Oh My Gosh

Now I feel really terrible about the title of the post I put on this morning. I had no idea that such a terrible storm would hit south Salt Lake this afternoon. Our granddaughter goes to the grade school in Alpine that is having 300 kids sleep overnight. Her school bus was the one bus on Draper Mountain that got the kids home and she is safe at home tonight. We've been busy calling and making sure everyone is home and safe. Becky is visiting teaching and we're just waiting for her to call when she gets home. I'm busy trying to get information from K.S.L online.

Sorry about the snow in Utah

O.K. it's hard to get sympathy when we complain that "its cold today" and we mean it hasn't gotten above 65. Oceanside is warmer than it has been for the last 5 years.

We arrived on the 10th of January and it took us 1/2 hour to settle in and feel at home. Actually we felt at home the minute we drove onto Highway 1. Becky and Elroy and kids came the following week and it was great and Tim and Melanie and the twins left last Monday and we had great week. I bought a year membership to Legoland so I foist myself off on to any and all visitors that are going there. Also I can go have fried apple cinammon fries anytime I want.

We are walking to the movie this afternoon "Juno". California is the only time we ever go to movies at the theatre. Too busy in Utah and too far to a theatre in Colorado.

Our anniversary is coming up and Wendell has ordered a "total lunar eclipse" to celebrate. What a guy. He said he would get me something really special.

Happy birthday to our Steve today. Wish I had a baby picture of him down here that I could post.

This blogging is harder than it looks. You actually have to keep at it or it's just another thing that doesn't get done.

September was great. Wendell and I went to New York for a week and then he came back to Utah for a week and Alice and Glenna flew back.

I'm a little obsessive about New York. If we win the lottery we'll have an apartment in my friend Judi's apartment house. What a great location. Greenwich Village. I feel about 19 when i'm there. My friends are very patient with my obsession and I can usually talk one or two (sometimes 3( of them into going with me. We exchange our cabin in Grand Lake for an apartment in New York. We have been lucky to find a great gal Judi-(all Judi'/Judy's) are great people. O.K. I knew one in high school that wasn't so great. Anyway Judi loves Grand Lake and wants to return there many time in the future.

Anyway I am on the alert all year for new and interesting things to do there. This year it was the street fair on 79th, the Delecorte and Jill Sobel, Morgan Library, shopping for Kate Spade knockoffs behind a hidden door on Canal Street and then being chased from the store when I took pictures. Museum of the City of New York, Ukraine Institute(old Harry Sinclair Mansion on 5th ave.) then around the corner to the French Embassy where the main staircase is that they filmed Scarlett on for Gone With The Wind. It actually doesn't look like the staircase but the guard said it was. The guard laughed at me when I ask about the staircase because he said most people came to look at the Michelangelo statue right behind us. Used to be the old Payne-Whitney mansion. The small 5 story in-between the Ukraine and French building is the last remaining private residence on 5th Ave. Trust me. I do my research on this stuff. Top of the Rock for lunch one day (10 times better than the Empire State Building) and then you squeeze in about 10 walks in Central Park. Preferably in the Ramble. Took the double decker bus tour this year. We don't usually do touristy things but this was actually pretty cool. The guide we had on the last tour was a hoot. I can now tell you which 14 room apartment in the Dakota is Yoko Ono's.

Walked the length of Bleeker St. The West Village is so much better than SoHo.

Took Wendell to the Jon Stewart Show one night. Terri got us VIP tickets again but the seats had us looking at Jodi Fosters back during the guest interview. Man, is she tiny. The Naked Cowboy in Times Square is always good and I found Stiffen Court finally. It's on 36th between 3 & Lexington and is now EXPENSIVE private homes but used to be the stable's for the horses used by the very rich in the late 1800's and early turn of the century. Got into the "Betty Comden" tribute and the rehearsal for the New York Philharmonic. YoYo Ma was the guest artist. So good. Anyway we had a great time and Judi bonded seriously with Grand Lake. She picked wild mushrooms with the chef from Carolines and was invited into the insider's book club and the postmistress invited her to return this winter for a vacation and offered to let her stay with her.

We are back in Utah until January 15th. Closed up the cabin, gave it a blessing to protect it from a forest fire and headed home the end of September.

Spend 1 or 2 days a week with my Mom and get to see the Grandkids and kids as often as we can.

Steve and Dena are in Seattle this week. He presented a paper at a Dr's convention on a procedure he had perfected. He's hoping to get into PA school next summer.

Tim left today for Moab to take part in a 24 hour relay bike race. We will watch his progress on the website tomorrow. Abby is still scoring winning goals for her soccar team and Matt can beat anybody at computer games.

Baylee is in soccer and Jackson is breaking all the little girls hearts.

Allison had a little boy at school ask her for her phone number so she gave him a made up one. How does a kindergartener know how to do that.

Everybody is busy with kids in school and we are getting ready for the Family Halloween Party. There is something seriously wrong with a 64 year old Grandma that decorates as much for Halloween as she does for Christmas.
