VINTAGE THINGIES THURSDAY

We have a great little 1890 museum on the shores of Grand Lake. It is a historical hotel named
The Kauffman House. Ezra Kauffman and his wife raised 3 daughters in the hotel and it was owned by the family until 1945. I'll be posting more about it often.

There is a wallpaper restoration taking place. They will leave this strip of the original paper.
The photo on the wall is of two of the Kauffman daughters.

Vintage washing machine

Beautiful pass-through. Originally there was one here that matched the small chest to the right, but it disappeared. This one was saved from the old ghost town of Gaskill shortly before the Park Service tore down what remained of the town-- sometime in the 60's probably.

Patience Kemp was the driving force towards saving the hotel and starting the Historical Association. She and her mother Mary Cairns were the town historians. Mary wrote the history of Grand Lake in a book called "Grand Lake in the Olden Days". The geraniums in the window are reminiscent of the ones Mrs. Kauffman kept in this window. It's my understanding that these geraniums are very old. Each fall a town gardener takes them home for the winter. She starts several plants from starts of these plants. At the town flower sale in late May they are rationed and always the first plants to go.

I am so embarrassed -- I have never been inside this house. Thirty eight summers here and still I haven't visited. I will have to repent.

I LOVE houses like this. Here in NZ we have an old colonial one on show in the Auckland Museum - it's my favourite place to go :-)

The geraniums were my favorite thing in the house! I love old houses and possessions. I regret many of the antiques I have let go.
Have a great week-end!

I love places like this, especially the wallpaper restoration and making it look lived-in.
