I WANT TO GO HOME

1. Find a really ugly pair of red shoes.
2. Get a little dog to squeeze- my mothers yappy little thing will do.
3. Click my heels and repeat three times---THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE NEW YORK
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE NEW YORK
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE NEW YORK
Worked for Dorothy, I'll give it try.

SUNDAY NEW YORK TIMES

I love the "special graphic T" that is featured in the supplement magazines occasionally ie: Fashion, Men's Fashion, Travel, Food etc. I look forward each time to seeing what the "T" looks like.

Recent Highlights

1. Leonie Faroll, class o9f 49, left Wellesley College gifts of $860,000. before she died. When she died in 2003 she left them $27 million. Most of it was to be used for the power plant. Whatever

2. Albert Hofmann, the chemist who discovered LSD died last week.

3.Multi-racial children are so rare in China they cause the Chinese to stare.

4. A photo of Alvar Aalto's 1978 vase. Gotta get me one of those. Sure.

5. The history of the song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"

6. A great review of the new book titled "Who Do You Think You Are". Just want I need-- another book I have to buy.

7. And last but not least a fun article about Le Roy, N.Y. being the Jell-O kingdom of the world---you heard me-- it's not Utah like we always thought. They have a museum and some interesting facts include 1. Jello is 80% sugar, 2.Norman Rockwell illustrated early ads, 3. Jello issued baseball cards in the 60's and there was a Very Berry Barbie doll which helped introduce a new flavor. The article ended with the quote "How do you ruin Jell-O?"

Hard to choose a favorite, but I really like this one.

MORE GOOD NEWS FROM NEW YORK CITY

Glenna just dropped off her copy of The New York Observer--it just started coming to her a couple of months ago--she has no idea why. Anyway, for all of us in the market for a residence in New York at the right price, there are two great ones listed today.

1. Lufkin's wonderful restored chapel apartment of the old New York Cancer Hospital (built in 1880's) is on the market for $17.5 M. It looks out onto Central Park between 105 and 106th Central Park West. He's 76 (looks about 40) and his wife is 40 years younger . Both beautiful people and according to the article "very likable". They originally paid $1.512.000. in 2004 and put $5. million into remodeling it. Unfortunately the company that did the ceiling goofed up the insulation and it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Go figure. Anyway their moving to their country home since they only used this place a couple of times a week. If your interested contact Nikki Field at Sotheby's International Realty.
Now if you have already received your income tax refund and want to bump things up a little---

Brooke Astor's duplex penthouse is going on the market next week. They don't seem to think they will have a problem getting $46. million for it. They have already had discreet inquires. Better hurry if your interested. That's a lot more than Lufkins and is 3 blocks from the park. But I guess if your up that high you'd still get a view of the treetops.

We've got a lot going on next week so won't be able to check into them but thought someone else might like to. Good Luck

YES-- ITS SUNDAY NEW YORK TIMES DAY

Took me 5 hours to graze through a great Sunday Times today. Each week I read the sections in the same order usually saving the best for last. Todays favorites were:

2. A whole section on the two new baseball stadiums going in. Very interesting. My 90 year old mother-in-law is very happy now that baseball season has started. She can quote amazing stats for the sport. Leaves a real void in her life when the season is over.
3. "Edison...Was't he the Guy who invented everything?"
4. "Recalling the Madness-- Viagra 10 years ago."
5. "Did your Shopping List Kill a Songbird?" Pesticides and fruit coming from South America
year round. Everyone will be going to the neighborhood Farmer's Market.
6. Modern Love was fun-- "How We Got From Grief to Pancakes".
7. "Brooklyn and the East Bay: Sisters in Idiosyncrasy"
8. "Gatekeepers to the Art World"
9. "Why Blog? Reason No. 92: Book Deal" Had some good links in it.
10. "Serving Platters of Minced Politician" Very good-- although I'll bet she wonders where
she'd be if she hadn't got her feelings hurt. Hope to see her performance next trip.
11. Deborah Soloman's interview of Paul O'Neill-- very good
12. "Lost and Found" Online Auction and Antique sites are changing theobsessive
collecting. Good links
13. Excellent article on "Dream for Darfur". Read it slowly and then went over it to make sure I
hadn't missed anything. Alot there I didn't know about China and the Olympics.
14. Karachi's Winter Days by Sehba Sarwar. Trip to Pakistan-- scary.
15. Greek Revival-- Good article by Eleni N. Gage. Good to see a daughter follow in her Dad's
footsteps.
16. "Weekend in New York" listed the Flea Markets. Will be filing this one for next trip with hubby.
17. Essay by Rachel Donadio "It's Not You, It's Your Books"
and my "Need to Read" list grew by 4 books from the reviews.

Amy Sacco answered the "Travel Questions" and I decided I would too.

1. Is there a tourist trap that you actually love? I don't consider it a T.T. but I love Grand Central Terminal-- on the other hand I detest Time's Square.
2. Carry-on or Check? Depends on length of trip but I'm beginning to prefer check. I've been known to go over the weekend to Denver with nothing but my purse.
3. Which living person that you don't know would you most like to travel with? Richard Branson
4. First class next to a crying baby or coach in total silence? First Class- I used to carry a zip-lock bag with children's toys to give out just for this purpose.
5. What's the craziest thing you've eaten? Craziest named thing was "spotted Dick". It was a muffin with dates in it. I make it a habit to always order something I haven't a clue about when I'm in Europe. Sometimes I have the waiter choose for me.
6. Cutest Hotel Staff?-- Don't use hotels-- Home Exchanges are the only way to go. The exchange in Holland had really cute neighbors.
7. While traveling, my status has gotten me.....My status got me zip but our two daughters employment with Delta got us First Class over the pond every time. Actually got me 1st class- hubby took coach twice when there was only 1 seat left. Non-rev. rules.
8. When your final day arrives, in which hotel would you like to die?-- Our cabin in Colorado.

FROZEN GRAND CENTRAL

Just found this on New York City Daily Photo. This is why I love New York.

This blogging is harder than it looks. You actually have to keep at it or it's just another thing that doesn't get done.

September was great. Wendell and I went to New York for a week and then he came back to Utah for a week and Alice and Glenna flew back.

I'm a little obsessive about New York. If we win the lottery we'll have an apartment in my friend Judi's apartment house. What a great location. Greenwich Village. I feel about 19 when i'm there. My friends are very patient with my obsession and I can usually talk one or two (sometimes 3( of them into going with me. We exchange our cabin in Grand Lake for an apartment in New York. We have been lucky to find a great gal Judi-(all Judi'/Judy's) are great people. O.K. I knew one in high school that wasn't so great. Anyway Judi loves Grand Lake and wants to return there many time in the future.

Anyway I am on the alert all year for new and interesting things to do there. This year it was the street fair on 79th, the Delecorte and Jill Sobel, Morgan Library, shopping for Kate Spade knockoffs behind a hidden door on Canal Street and then being chased from the store when I took pictures. Museum of the City of New York, Ukraine Institute(old Harry Sinclair Mansion on 5th ave.) then around the corner to the French Embassy where the main staircase is that they filmed Scarlett on for Gone With The Wind. It actually doesn't look like the staircase but the guard said it was. The guard laughed at me when I ask about the staircase because he said most people came to look at the Michelangelo statue right behind us. Used to be the old Payne-Whitney mansion. The small 5 story in-between the Ukraine and French building is the last remaining private residence on 5th Ave. Trust me. I do my research on this stuff. Top of the Rock for lunch one day (10 times better than the Empire State Building) and then you squeeze in about 10 walks in Central Park. Preferably in the Ramble. Took the double decker bus tour this year. We don't usually do touristy things but this was actually pretty cool. The guide we had on the last tour was a hoot. I can now tell you which 14 room apartment in the Dakota is Yoko Ono's.

Walked the length of Bleeker St. The West Village is so much better than SoHo.

Took Wendell to the Jon Stewart Show one night. Terri got us VIP tickets again but the seats had us looking at Jodi Fosters back during the guest interview. Man, is she tiny. The Naked Cowboy in Times Square is always good and I found Stiffen Court finally. It's on 36th between 3 & Lexington and is now EXPENSIVE private homes but used to be the stable's for the horses used by the very rich in the late 1800's and early turn of the century. Got into the "Betty Comden" tribute and the rehearsal for the New York Philharmonic. YoYo Ma was the guest artist. So good. Anyway we had a great time and Judi bonded seriously with Grand Lake. She picked wild mushrooms with the chef from Carolines and was invited into the insider's book club and the postmistress invited her to return this winter for a vacation and offered to let her stay with her.

We are back in Utah until January 15th. Closed up the cabin, gave it a blessing to protect it from a forest fire and headed home the end of September.

Spend 1 or 2 days a week with my Mom and get to see the Grandkids and kids as often as we can.

Steve and Dena are in Seattle this week. He presented a paper at a Dr's convention on a procedure he had perfected. He's hoping to get into PA school next summer.

Tim left today for Moab to take part in a 24 hour relay bike race. We will watch his progress on the website tomorrow. Abby is still scoring winning goals for her soccar team and Matt can beat anybody at computer games.
Baylee is in soccer and Jackson is breaking all the little girls hearts.
Allison had a little boy at school ask her for her phone number so she gave him a made up one. How does a kindergartener know how to do that.
Everybody is busy with kids in school and we are getting ready for the Family Halloween Party. There is something seriously wrong with a 64 year old Grandma that decorates as much for Halloween as she does for Christmas.
