Finally made it to the "New Museum"

on the Bowery.
It's kinda like the Guggenheim only taller,

and downtown-----but.......
if you donate enough money they let you

paint the elevators any color you want.

These are huge and take up a whole wall in a dark room.

This is huge and multi-layered. I said to the guard "my grandson made one of those

with 4 cans of playdoh the other day". Very seriously he said "How long did it take him".
I replied "20 minutes, he's 3". He stroked his beard, looked at the floor and didn't say a word. It was then that I knew he spoke limited English or had a really bad

sense of humor. Or maybe not???

But I did love this painting. It is huge, about the size of our living room windows.

Now this is truly scary. We didn't just run onto this place---we

actually went looking for it. I had read a piece in the Times about
it and thought Dad might enjoy it.

This is the guy who guards the door when Billy won't be back
for an hour. "No, you can't go in" but we still came too close
to trying to bring a large "Dr. Pepper" tin sign
home with us.

Evidently Google objects to 70 + photo's in one posting so this is our

first day, no order to anything but over 11,000 steps in a little

over 4 hours. So much for taking it easy on this trip.

We're sure we witness'd our first "large" drug deal in this doorway.

Man yanks open door and man standing outside hands him a

wad of rolled up bills about the size of a pint bottle. Man outside

is yanked inside and door slams. All this as we are walking past

on the sidewalk.

Look who has their name on the Star's trailer on a movie shoot.

Any time you see alot of trailers lining the side of a street,

a catering truck with expensive goodies laid out, about 50 men

standing around doing nothing, and miles of electric cable

you can be sure you have stumbled upon the filming of a

"movie" or "t.v." show. This is a pilot of a new t.v. show

called "Girls". The story of a bunch of young girls

making their way in New York City. What a novel idea,
can't imagine why no one has thought of that before????

Nobody pays $100. for a pair of jeans. Go to major Thrift Store and buy 5 pairs of jeans at $5 -$6 a piece. Good buy, but they don't look like the one at the Wight House. All the time I'm thinking how cool it would be if I could

get into a brand that one of my daughters used to wear.

One daughter had a thing for Girbaud, another had a pair

of Lucky Jeans.

Neither seemed exactly up my alley. Go back to Wight House and hand over the American Express for a

great pair of expensive jeans and then I look at the tag------

Making Egg Creams for 111 Years, Even on Passover

David Fox has a problem with his rabbi. I sit across from David, at his office desk, in the family factory H. Fox and Company, deep in Brooklyn. David’s family founded the company and for the past century it has manufacturing a wide variety of flavored syrups. Today, however, I am only interested in one, Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup, which is widely regarded as the essential ingredient for the classic egg cream, once described by Mel Brooks as “the opposite of circumcision” as it “pleasurably reaffirms your Jewishness.” It is only Hanukkah, but the time has come once again, as it has for more than a hundred years, to ready his plant to produce the Passover batch. Fox’s U-Bet is used all around the world, and year-long; Passover is no exception. Kashering the syrup for Passover is no small task. First the ingredients need to change. Only real sugar will do for replacing the corn syrup, producing something a bit sweeter while maintaining the smooth, round taste that distinguishes the syrup from other brands. But sugar is expensive. “Yet we don’t charge more.” Why not? “We are the only chocolate syrup that I know of that’s kosher for Passover,” he explains. “We just don’t think it’s the right thing to do.” Next, the vessels need to be kashered, the whole processing line from beginning to end. Everything is sanitized, sterilized, and boiled up. It takes an entire day to prepare, a lost day of production. The 36,000 square foot factory, once up and running, will produce 2,000 crates on a good day, each containing a dozen bottles. And of course, you need a rabbi to oversee it all. Fox’s rabbi has been with the company for 45 years. “He’s not in the OU,” David explains, referring to the Orthodox Union, one of the largest and oldest kosher certifying agencies in the country. “But he is extraordinarily versed.” Fox’s rabbi, however, is not the problem. It’s everyone else, he says. It’s a society whose values are different from the world in which U-Bet was first born. H. Fox and Company was founded in 1900, by David’s grandfather, cooking syrup over an open flame in his tenement house in Brownsville. But he was more than a syrup entrepreneur. He was also a gambler. One day he traveled to Texas with an eye on an oil well investment. The well was dry. While he failed to pick up a fortune, he picked up the phrase: you bet it’s good! Originally the label read ‘Fox’s U-Bet It’s Good.’ Over the years it became simply Fox’s U-Bet. The syrup has been touted by Jerry Lewis, Rob Reiner, and even Mel Brooks in the pages of Playboy, amongst others. The rest is history. David is approaching his 69th birthday, running one of the two or three syrup companies left in the New York metropolitan region. His son, Kelly, has since joined the business. But when David first worked professionally within the company, there were three to four dozen competitors down the block, it was a different time, when the rabbi’s word was all that was needed to assure consumers a product was kosher. Now when some people hear that Fox’s U-Bet’s rabbi is not with the OU, preventing the syrup from carrying the more stringent OU heksher, or kosher mark, they inevitably ask David why they don’t change their certification. “Because we’ve been working with a man who has been with us almost 50 years,” he tells them. “He’s grown with us. He’s part of our family. I don’t think it’s the way we should run our lives.” David’s pride in his product is about more than quality and values. With egg creams, he tells me, “I don’t think it’s only a taste sensation.” It is something more, much more. “I think the concept of going in and ordering an egg cream brings back a lot of memories. It puts them back into a different time.” For David, that is a time when nothing was better than an afternoon spent with a Spalding and a broom, playing stick ball. “It may only be for seconds, but they lose themselves.” With every bottle of syrup purchased and egg cream mixed, a company is supported that embodies a way of being in the world held over from an earlier era, maintaining a family-run business which proudly stands against the tide of history, refusing to fire it’s rabbi. “At the end of the day,” David tell me, “when you die, all you’re left with is your name, your name and what it represents.” Barry Joseph writes occasionally for both the Forward in print and on this blog. Jane Russell was a standout because she never let the fact that she

embodied sizzling sexuality ruin her life. She was smart, grounded, and a real lady who steered clear of the tabloid hell that sent many another “bombshell” to a miserable fate.

I loved her in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and I thought her best match in a leading man was Robert Mitchum. They had great chemistry.

You gotta love a winner, bless her memory.

Lost a dear family friend this week. We owe him a lot. 40 years ago, if Max hadn't been looking for a better location for a mountain hide-a-way and found it in Grand Lake then Runyan's wouldn't have followed him and bought the lot next door and we wouldn't have followed the Runyan's and bought the lot up the road and then Simcox's, Hileman's, Damstedt's etc........

How do you thank one family that has added so much to your memories. Cabin memories,

Denver memories and Alpine memories.
Diana and I pregnant with beautiful daughters at the same time. By the way Diana, you are one of the most gracious and kind people I have ever met. Called by Max to be Primary President because he liked the way I taught Tom in Sunbeams. Steve and his Primary Graduation----Steve, please forgive me for being so hard nosed. As you know I've lightened up a bunch in the passing years. Marcia offering me her spare room if I couldn't afford a room in New York on my necessary trips there. Shauna, watching you take over the duties of the oldest daughter, much like I have done with my Mom and Andi--no words can express how much I appreciate and love you. You constantly amaze me.

Last summer was so special to spend time with our grandchildren and your grandchildren at the cabin. They are the third generation that love and call Grand Lake home. Watching them all play and interact was a gift we'll always remember.

About a month ago my daughter-in-law commented "My horoscope sign has changed". I replied " That can't be, someone didn't proof read the paper very well before it went to press". Well today in the New York Times, sure enough, there is an article about the shifting of the axis, alignment of stars, something about gravity, yada, yada, yada. So I hopped on the Web to find out "what I am now." I have always been a Gemini and now I'm a Taurus. If you know me, you know that makes a lot more sense. But still, I've always been a Gemini--- I'm not sure I want to change. Then there is the Chinese Year of the Whatever. Is this affected also. In the past according to the Chinese thingy dingy, my husband and I were the only two symbols that should never marry! Uh, going on 47 years. Except in cross checking I discovered that those two symbols have now changed also and suddenly we are compatible but I'm inclined to be independent and need space often, which is right on. What the !!!!!

But at the end of the article somebody named Ms. Biehl said "This so-called new information about the Earth's wobble has nothing to do with how Western astrology works. The Western zodiac does not use the constellations. And as a result, no one's astrological sign has changed".

I think I'll resolve the issue by remaining a Gemini and reading the Taras horoscope. Or maybe I'll just choose the one I like best that day.

For sure, I'm not going to tell my Mother that her sign has possibly changed-- she's 87 and that would really throw her for a loop.

Our children like sports. O.K. maybe "sports" is a lite explanation.
Extreme sports is more like it.
Our son is not the skier in the photo but he did finish this race and

at one point, he was in this very spot.
Please, just give me strength.
The same time he is doing this I am sitting in a class to

get a concealed weapons permit so I can hike in the mountains of

Colorado in the summer alone. The bears don't bother me but

we're beginning to have a mountain lion problem.

Anyway, the instructor was a Glenn Beck/Bill O'Reilly wana-be ex-police officer/military
and after 4 hours of this, I had only been home 10 minutes when

I made a dash for the bathroom and threw-up.
We do extreme sports a little differently.

WEIRD DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT

Had yearly appointment to get prescriptions renewed today. I got to Dr's office, checked in and sat down to wait. A few minutes later the nurse came out and called my name. I started to get up but an older lady across the room from me also got up and said “that’s me”. She had barely arrived and hadn't even got her coat off. I tried to get the attention of the nurse and tell her that she had the wrong person but she didn't see me and closed the door. I sat back down and thought “ I’ll just wait and see how long it takes them to discover their mistake”. I waited a few minutes and then got up and walked over and picked up the lone remaining chart on the top of the counter waiting for the Dr. The 6 year old receptionist looked up and said “You can’t look at that, it’s confidential”. I was looking at the chart name by now, to point out that the previous patient and I had the same first name but not last and they might want to rethink using both names when they usher patients in to see the Dr. The first thing I noticed on the chart was that they had misspelled my name and started to tell them that the spelling was wrong but pronounced the same when the 6 year old receptionist whispered to me “we know, we took the wrong patient back and we’re trying to correct it now. “ It was about this time that I began to process that my chart was back in the room with the lady with the “same” name as me and I was holding her chart------except her middle name and last name were the same as mine. Her middle name was spelled exactly the same as mine which is an unusual spelling for a short middle name. I’ve known for many years that there was someone in this small town with the same first and last name as me but had no idea about the middle name. That we would turn up at the same Dr’s office, on the same day, with the same appointment time is weird.

O.K.-- story starts out that Fran(middle-red outfit) is having a party for herself.

Not a birthday party but to celebrate the fact that she has

lost 100 pounds during the last year. Hey, I'm all for that.
I've been on every diet known to mankind and then some.
At the end of the article it mentions that she has had "body

contouring prodecures and subscribed to a serious exercise regimen" and

mentions both of the Dr.'s names that supervised such.

I wouldn't have thought anything about this pat on the back that

Fran was giving herself if it hadn't been for the middle part of the

article where it tells us what Fran's occupation is.

Fran is a Clinical Nutritionist and a Naturopathic Physician.

She has also written several health, diet and recipe books.

Then I read this in the New York Times today:
"While pursuing a full-time acting career, he earned a bachelor's degree at U.C.L.A. and then enrolled simultaneously in four graduates program---New York University for film, Columbia for writing, Brooklyn College for writing and Warren Wilson College for poetry. He's also pursuing a Ph.D. in English in Yale and taking classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. His fiction has been published in Esquire (his first book-length collection was published by Scribner). His first solo art show was at the Clocktower Gallery in New York City."

May have to rethink his status in my life.

"Lightening" was the first pony to carry mail for the Pony Express west of Salt Lake City. The first day she galloped into the first relay station twenty two miles away in only one hour and five minutes. That is 1 hour longer than it took my Grandma to talk the assistant manager at Wells Fargo Bank into forking one over, without opening a new account or an exchange of favors or money, because I'm 2 and I wanted one.

Hiked back to the "right" location of the old Phantom Guest Ranch.
So much history in this valley.

Original ranch house was on this Park trail next to the Colorado River.

Original entrance to Ranch. Comes down from Trail Ridge Road.
You can still see the entrance on the upper road if you know where to look.

Hiked up about 3 more miles and this girl and her boyfriend blew past us
going uphill. Youth is so good.

Phantom Ranch Meadow looking North to South

About 200 feet south of the entrance to the meadow are the remnant's of

the old root cellar. You could see small pieces of the lumber that was

used for the roof and a couple of large rusted tin cans. It was a huge

storage area but then they did a large business in the summer and

lived there through the winter.

This fella was right along side the highway on

the way home. His harem was on both sides of the road.
We counted about 14 cows. He was bellowing like crazy trying
to get them all together. I'm in the car and he was this close to the road.

information he had located yesterday and I
jumped on the M2 on Madison and went to The Museum of New York City.
They had a great display on vintage clothing titled

It was in the 50's. Maybe that explains it.

The Sukkah - This "tabernacle" was set up in Bryant Park for the Holiday. On the holiday of Sukkot, Jews are commanded to dwell in temporary shelters or booths, as their ancestors the Israelites did in the desert after the exodus.

The obligatory dash through Times Square. Unless your going to
a really good Broadway show there is no reason to be here. It is my least
favorite place in New York.

Got a late start today. Brunch in Bryant Park.

I may be getting too old for this. I'm go'in through

Motrin like crazy.

I did not eat half of this.

This is the Bryant Park's Outdoor Library for

Children. The children can read the books for as

long as they are in the area.
There is an Adult Outdoor Library on the other
side of the park.

Dad read an article a couple of months ago that said
Bryant Park's bathroom were 2nd on the list of "Best Bathrooms
in the United States". Grand America was 3rd. The fresh flowers
in this foyer are changed daily.

This is a huge inflatable RAT and it was outside of the Chase
Bank branch for this block. In Manhattan, Chase Branch's are

as plentiful as Starbucks. I have no idea what it was promoting or

if someone was upset at the bank.

Two great buildings-- Grand Central and Chrysler Building.

Walgreen's bought all of the Duane Reade Stores in Manhattan.
They are an institution and people don't want the name changed.

or as I prefer to call it--

Dad had made an appointment to do research on some Sinclair logo's
from the 50's. The Cooper-Hewitt had the designer's papers and archives.

I was more interested in the history if the house and the gardens.
They had several folders for Dad to go through so I walked a block to
the Jewish Museum that I haven't seen yet.

Well I'm not going to see the Jewish Museum today either. It's closed on Wednesday and for the next two days for Jewish Holidays. That's the

bad news but the book store was open-- good news. I did not eat

this cookie and I did not buy this bag of books.

Dad spent about 2 hours in the library and I read in the Garden.

Then across the street and into the Park. I have never seen the Jackie K. Onassis Reservoir. It's beautiful.

"Oh well, we'll just jump on an express going downtown. Everything

stops at 14th street which is O.K., even though we wanted to get off at

23rd." We need the extra steps on the pedometer.

"What ........why did this express just blow past 14th street.
We do not want to be on West 4th"
O.K. we can do this. Up the steps and over to the other side and

down the steps. Repeat after me "Only get on the local".
Yes, we made it. Off on 6th and 23. When we're good, we're good.

We're headed for a place called " Limelight Marketplace".

It's a very old church turned into a very upscale boutique-mall.
The minute we stepped in the door I knew 3 things. 1. Nothing in this
place would be my size. 2. We could afford nothing in this place.
3. We would not want to be able to afford anything in this place.
I read my article further after getting home and discovered this place

hasn't been a church for many years. Before this reincarnation it was

a infamous New York nightclub.

This is the 10th Precenct on 20th Street of the New York Police Department.

We stopped in and ask a nice Sargent Petrossoki if he had any freebee's for
a 2 1/2 year old little boy that could sing all the words to "Bad Boys, Bad Boys" and really liked policemen.
They gave us a badge and a pencil.

DAY 4 NEW YORK

We have something for everyone today.

the Pan Am building in the 60's and Janean

worked here. I am so impressed.

Wanted to see the inside of the Polish Embassy today. Sometimes
they have programs and you can look around. Unfortunately
today was not one of those days. We could look at the ceiling of
one of the side rooms or we could get a visa to Poland. Those were
our choices. I have this insane interest in the old buildings
in New York.

Hadn't planned on going to the Morgan Library today which is just across

the street . It had an exhibit on Mark Twain but since I never
finished "Tom Sawyer" I figured we'd pass. But in passing the building
they had a banner out advertising along with Mark an exhibit on Ann Morgan,

daughter of J.P. Morgan and her extraordinary work during WW I rebuilding
France. I had never heard of this effort but since my Grandfather served in
northern France during the War I wanted to learn more.

Between 1917 and 1924, three hundred fifty American women, all volunteers, went to Picardy, a region of Northern France that had been heavily affected by four years of war. Under the auspices of the American Committee for Devastated France as it was called, these women chose to share the life of the rural Aisne population and to come to their aid and thanks to private funds that had been collected in the United States by Anne Morgan, daughter of John Pierpont Morgan.
For 7 years they carried out exemplary reconstruction work with the aim of enabling these people to become self-sufficient. At the wheel of their Ford trucks, which they drove and repaired themselves-they covered the areas around Soissons dispensing first aid, distributing food and providing help. They created a network of nurses, children's library's, (a first in France), social centers and kindergartens. These photo's from the exhibit are incredible.

Hopped a bus going uptown because we were going to a shop in the basement of a book store that featured Vintage Toys. The book store was open but the owner of the shop downstairs is only in Wednesday through Sunday---sometimes. We'll come back tomorrow.
We were going to have lunch in either Bryant Park or Paley Park but it was raining so hard we found a Subway. That's like eating at McDonald's when you're in Italy, but at least we were dry.

We were discussing the numbering of the streets in Manhattan
and there is no reasonable explanation. A store on 35th street and
Madison Ave. has an address of 199 Madison Ave. Maybe someday
someone will explain it to me.

They had this photo at the register. It's a picture of people in Coventry, England during WW II in a bombed-out bookstore, looking for books. It's quite incredible.

This ? in the entrance caught my attention first and I looked to see
what kind of a store it was. Upscale jewelry store. Interesting transition.

Loved the silk skirt ($2560.00) in Ralph Lauren's Store and there was

a beautiful sweater ($900.00) to go with it.

Told you we had something for everyone. Trust me, if your rich or even
semi-rich and you leave your earthly belonging behind, your next

stop is Frank E. Campbell. In business since 1898, it is the Funeral

Parlor for the Upper East Side. It was even mentioned on "Mad Men" last week when Don Drapers ancient secretary died at her desk.
The nice man gave us an quick tour of the upstairs rooms and the chapel
and "No" you don't want to know what I told him to gain entrance. But now I'll know when I read an obituary in the Times just how to picture the place.

Bought a couple of lottery tickets at a deli and then proceeded to shop for the property we'll buy when we win. Just a couple of places that are in the running.

A Church garden that has a Welcome sign and the gate was chained.

This is a cool building so we walked over to see what it was. Name on top said "United States Mortgage and Trust Company"

The basement and 2 floors that are spaced behind the tall windows on the bottom belong to a company called "VBH". These are the initials of a gentleman who makes very expensive purses and jewelry. The purses are displayed on couches, chairs, cabinets, etc. The purses have no LOGO's on them-- that is their logo-- understatement. They never advertise. Made in Florence, Italy by hand. It is strictly word of mouth. Anywhere from the upper hundreds to $14,000. Finally a purse to go with the skirt at Ralph Lauren. A beautiful young lady approached us and ask if she could help us. Ya, sure. We're both in Levi's and I have my New York purse-- the one the twins made me 11 years ago and is more precious than the ones staring back at me. I thought she just might ask us to leave. I ask her about the history of the building. She was so friendly and told us we were welcome to look around the store and and at the custom jewelry downstairs in the vault. Her name was Mrika and she was delightful. If you need an expensive purse please go here-- word of mouth and all.

Bought a book on Lily Safra. I didn't know she would allow a book to be written. 4th richest woman in the world. She married well. 4 times. 2nd husband was a Brazilian millionaire that died from 2 (two) gunshot wounds to the chest. It was ruled a suicide O.K. Her fourth husband died in a fire in their Villa in Monte Carlo. The nurse is in jail for that one. If I were the author I would up my insurance.

I was waiting on First Avenue and 60th Street for the M15 local bus. Several limited ones passed by, but no local. A woman, waiting as well, and I started to commiserate about the poor bus service.

We started walking and talking. By 72nd Street, we were like old friends.
By 79th Street, she had told me that her parents, in August 1939, got on the last ship leaving Hamburg before the borders were sealed.

O.K. O.K. I can hear the moans already. Do we have to go to the

Lower East Side Tenement Museum every year. Ummmmm, the

answer is probably "Yes". At least, Please--I really want to.

They have just bought this building across the street from
the Museum shop and near the existing Tenement Museum.
They will be recreating more current apartments-- say the last 60 years
instead of 150 years. Love this place.

Got a late start and had to hurry to make the 12:30 "Walking Tour" that

lasted 1 1/2 hours. The weather was cool and fluxed between light drizzle
and raining buckets. Even with umbrella's my shirt sleeve was wet to

the shoulder.

Annie-with the blue umbrella- is our guide. After the tour she

fills me in on how to become a volunteer when we move back here.
Just getting all the "ducks" in a row.

Jarmulowsky Bank

Sender Jarmulowsky, Russian-Jewish immigrant, arrived
in New York in 1873 and opened a bank. By 1912, he built this
magnificent "temple of finance". He was a trusted honest banker
but unfortunately died in 1912 and his son's ran it into the ground and
lost the business in 1917. The building sold last year for 32 million and
will be converted to luxury condo's.

FORWARD BUILDING
The forward building opened in 1912, and housed the popular Jewish
Daily Forward, or Forverts. This Yiddish newspaper had national readership and helped immigrants adapt to life in America. It is also now luxury condo's.

P.S 42
has been educating children from immigrant families for over one hundred
and ten years. When the school opened in 1898, students were mainly Italian and Jewish. Today, the student body is primarily Chinese and Latino immigrants.

Great sign at the Museum gift shop. Also dropped $65.00 for books.

I know, I know but they were ones I didn't have.

Decided to make one more stop before heading back.

I took a picture of this building the last time I was here and it doesn't look

like they have made any progress since then. I'd love to know
the history of the stand-alone building--- they are trying hard to keep it
safe while they build next to it.

I wanted to show Dad the African Burial Ground Memorial Museum. It's
closed on Monday. Must have been Monday last time also because it was
closed them also. We'll try later this week. But the outside memorial is
open.

In 1991 they were excavating for an addition to a government building when
they discovered a 200 year old burial ground. Due to public pressure they
stopped and hence the Memorial. It's beautiful.

The Subway from ????????. This looked like sardines in a can.
We waited for the next one.
Headed home. Just 1 block to go.

NEW YORK DAY 2-- OH MY GOSH

Slept great last night-- it cooled off. In 10 years I have never lost my MetroCard for the Subway.........until yesterday. I think it fell out of my pocket when I pulled my camera out last night. Hope someone finds it and uses it. Anyway bought a new one this morning and keep it in a different pocket.

One of the things I love about New York is how it let's you think you have

control of your life and then it slips in and changes it .....
Today we were just going to spend the day in the Park and take it easy. And then New York said "I have a little something additional planned for you"

Coming up the escalator at Columbus Circle I remembered an article I had read a year or so ago about the Huntington Building. It was being turned into some kind of a museum which was what Huntington Hartford always wanted it to be for his art collection. It was referred to as "The Lollipop Building" because of the stick/circle design that circled the bottom of the building.

Huntington Hartford managed to spend/lose/squander an entire fortune.
So instead of taking a left we took a right and there it was---right in front of us.
Decided we'd fork out the $12.00 admission because how bad could it be----really.

IT WAS WONDERFUL!!!!

Not particularly their permanent collection but the current exhibit called "Dead or Alive". I know this is the title because it's on the $39.00 book I bought.

I tried to enlarge photo's for this post but couldn't-- so just go to the link and see for yourself. It's amazing.

before the guard jumped down my neck for taking pictures.

In the lobby to the museum is a framed statement ....

Dad called me over to read it and proudly announced that he had just
discovered that he was a "kippler" not a picker.

After about 2 hours we crossed over to the entrance to the Park. Ate the traditional hot dog and Dad had hot peanuts and we sat at the Merry-go-round and watched people for awhile. On to the Dairy to see if they had anything new in stock that I didn't have. Ended up buying a new map because I left the one I brought at the apartment.

My favorite Central Park performers are "The Blue Vipers from Brooklyn"
but a very close second is "The Afro-bats". We've seen them about 6 times over the years and they just get better.

There was music coming from behind the bandstand so
we walked around to see what was going on. Came to a gate but the
nice man told us it was the VIP entrance. I told him I was a friend of
Jon Stewart's and he told me to show him my name on the list. I smiled and said "I'm not getting any younger and you want me to walk 500 more steps
to go in another entrance". He motioned Dad over and let us in.
We had lucked into the final Summer Stage production.
"Black Sea Roma Festival" A Celebration of Gypsy Music from Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Bulgaria.
Is America a great place or what. France is exporting all of their Gypsy's back to Eastern Europe and we're giving them a party. And it was a good one.

This young girl was teaching gypsy dancing and she had a huge crowd participating with her.

This cute man was really getting into the music.

This girl could do magic with her hands and feet.

The man in the middle with his back to us arrives in an Armani suit
with his friend who is carrying a little shopping bag with "The Harvard
Club of New York" printed on the side. They looked like they were
at the wroooong party.

I watched the "man with the blond ponytail" come down out of the bleachers by me. He worried me. He walked like he had been breaking wild horses all his life. Kinda bent over and not sure if his knee's were going to bend. 10 minutes later I noticed a large circle of people had spontaneously formed down the "turf" a piece so I walked down to take a picture of them dancing. You guessed it,
there is my stoved up cowboy having a great time and he was dancing just fine thank you.

A lady came over and sat on the bleachers next to me. She had Fries. They smelled so good. She said they were. I ask her if I could take a picture
of them. When I ask if I could take a "little" smell of them she got up
and went to sit with a friend. It's amazing how low you can sink on 500 calories a day.

This little boy wanted his teenage sister to dance with him and she wouldn't.
He was into the music with all his heart.

Stopped at the boathouse-- I got some fruit and Dad got a bagel. I choose
a nice table under the trees where it was quiet. That was when the 2 young 20 something girls started talking very loudly about "living and drinking in the city". While they were lighting up our lunch one got a phone call from her Daddy and proceed to tell him how drunk she was last night and that's why she couldn't call home and let them know she was alright. Before she took the phone call she and the friend were belaboring the fact that they don't understand why Mummy and Daddy keep checking up on them. Don't they know they'll be just fine on their own.

George Stephanopoulos reading the Sunday Times. He had his dog with him and looked like he cared if we noticed him, so we didn't make a fuss. I'm doing so much better with celebrities since my first trip when I accosted Steve Forbes and made him take a picture with me.

Thought this was a fun photo. They did take the ride.

It's not really crashing the wedding if you don't go in a get a plate of food.

The first two numbers indicate nearest cross streets (outside the park) and the last two numbers, if even, indicate that the area is closer toward the east side (Fifth Avenue) and, if the numbers are odd, the area is closer toward the west side (Central Park West).

What do you know. We came out at 81st Street on Central Park West.

NEW YORK DAY 1

Will I never learn. More is not necessarily better. We took the red eye Jet Blue flight last night and arrived in New York at 5:30 N.Y time and 3:30 a.m. our time. I tried to tough it out without a sleeping pill so I didn't get much sleep. But Dad said he was ready to go after we got to the apartment. So we rested for about 45 minutes and headed out. We almost had to take a taxi home because we were both so exhausted at the end of our day. I've got to remember to take my I.D. with me at all times so when they find me face down in the gutter they can call someone to come get me.
The apartment is interesting as all New York older apartments are. I particularly like the real cow skin rug (big cow) in the living room. It was so hot today and the owner had taken the air conditioners out last week because they had a cold spell. But it's suppose to get much cooler tomorrow for 3 or 4 days so we'll just hope it happens.,

This is not our apartment but this is 20th St. on the way to the "Highline".
I don't think these people rent out rooms. Too bad.

I finally get to walk My "Highline". It's mine because I

have paid $25.00 a year to be a member since
it's inception 6 years ago
and now it's finished--- so it's part mine. Not like the lady
that stood up at a benefit dinner and

donated $10 Million dollars. Diane Von Furstenberg and her husband Barry Diller
have donated $10 million "twice". She also moved her business
warehouse from 12th Street to an old warehouse under the Highline.

The "Highline" is the old elevated railroad tracks
that used to bring meat to the slaughter houses on the
west side of Manhattan. The city wanted to take it down
until two young men formed a non-profit corporation to try to save it.

Oh, the Standard Hotel---known best for it's unsavory behavior at times.

Today alone we saw two models being photographed
on the Highline and two others elsewhere in our travels
Arrived at the end of the Line near 12th Street. They have
left the old rails in many places on the walk. Benches, and
redwood lounge chairs- people sunbathing, reading, taking
family photo's. Every one loves it.

I think this might be the only meat packing business left in this area.

A telephone booth-- We saw 3 today and it always catches me off guard
because their so rare in the city now.

Farmers Market at Abington Park. Bought some great cucumbers
and Honey Crisp apples and I carried them in my bag all day.

This brownstone has something to do with books but it was locked
and I couldn't find anything when I Googled it. I might have to go back
after the weekend. It's on Waverly. It could be a private library.

Several people were as interesting as the things they were selling.

Seems like every subway line is fouled up this weekend. There is
a lot of construction on the downtown subways. Just heard on the
news that 17 of the 19 subway lines are affected. To get to the
Governor's Island Ferry we had to get off at Chambers (a long way away)
and take a shuttle bus to the ferry. One lady had to take a shuttle to a shuttle and missed a funeral.

This is one of the old
ferry terminals but it has been restored and it's beautiful.

Governor's Island is an old military instillation that has been in use

over 200 years. In 2001 the city made a deal with the government
and now it's open on weekends. The ferry is free and you can rent
or take your bikes over and ride around all the old buildings. It's

pretty cool but please believe me when I say a man in a little shuttlebus saved our life. We got a nice tour of the whole island instead of the

50 feet after we got off the ferry. We were beginning to wear out.

Dad agree's with Glenna-- It's really good.

This is a beautiful park called "The Elevated Acre". It's surrounded
on three sides with tall skyscrapers and the fourth side overlooks the

East River. It has an escalator that goes from the sidewalk on Water Street

up to the Park. Except the escalator wasn't working today. It was a steep climb. Half-way up another model was having her photograph taken by a photographer that didn't look old enough to babysit.

This young man wasn't a model but he was having his picture taken.

To tell the truth I was more worried about the battery in his
laptop exploding from the heat. Today set a record for the high
for this day. Figures.

Now this is the strangest thing I've heard in a long time. At the A.T.& T building on Water Street we noticed this "crunched" sculpture. There was a guard there so I ask him if it was something from the Twin Towers. He said "No, it was a Helicopter that had crashed. I said "you have to be kidding". "No" he said, he had been told that the man that owned the building-- this doesn't mean he has anything to do with AT&T, he just owned the building and was very rich-- anyway, it was his helicopter and he was killed when it crashed. They crushed and cubed it and now it's a ?? on Water Street in front of a building he owned.
Don't you love Google. I actually found what I think is the situation and the guard had it "slightly wrong".

Our final objective of the Day. Bowne and Co. Stationary.
They still print upscale stationary on antique machines. Fun Store.

So exhausted we were tempted to take a $20.+ taxi ride home. "Cowboy'd Up" and found the subway on Wall Street. So tired when we got home. We'll take it easier tomorrow.

A retired Ranger from 1960 told us where the original entrance to Squeaky Bob Wheeler's Hotel de Hardscrabble was and we decided to try to find the original site. Found the entrance on Trail Ridge Road alright and followed directions to what we thought must have been the location.

Nice meadow but wrong place.

So we just took a nice walk along the Colorado headed north. Actually we did find the location of the Ranch but didn't know it until we got home and
looked at a map (where it was clearly marked). It was the one
place along the hike that I didn't take a picture.
It was in the meadow that junction's to Red Mountain.
Trees are alot taller now and the meadow doesn't look large enough
for the Ranch, but it's beautiful.
Stopped at Betty Dick's on the way home and walked back in to
see how it is doing. Looks like the Park Service is just hoping it
falls down so they won't have to do anything with it.

Juniper Library has a great Adult Summer Reading Program.

In a moment of "?" I decided I'd go for a black-out and read

every category. Mind you we had children and grandchildren coming 5 weeks and I made 2 trips back to Utah for miscellaneous so I had limited time for this endeavour. I didn't get the blackout but I only missed 4 category's. To qualify you only had to finish 5 books in Bingo fashion and I read 21.

My favorites were:
"To Kill a Mocking Bird" --- I know, it's embarrassing to admit I had never read it before but it instantly became my all time favorite book. Reading this one book "forced" me to buy 4 other books related to it. It's the 50th anniversary after all.

"Mountain of Crumbs" by Gorokhova. Incredible story of growing up in Russia.
"I Hope You Have A Good Life " by Campbell Armstrong. A memoir of 1961, loss and love and redemption.

"House on the River" by Rapoport. A sentimental journey to a location of a multi-generational cabin.

Least favorite:
"Imperfect Birds" Anne Lamott-- usually I love anything she writes but this was slow and painful.
"Lost Property" by Sonnenberg. I read this because the author just passed away and he lived in New York and the book was mentioned in his obituary. It was self-centered and boring. Lucky I just paid a couple of $ for it on Amazon.

Just plain PAINFUL was the Romance Novel
"Sunset in St. Tropaz". I chose the thinnest book on the shelf and still could barely get through it.

The good news is that when they put all the entries in a hat and then drew out the winner -------I Won. $25.00 in cash that I blew on myself at the Quilt Store.

could prepare to race on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. This is the

first time we have ever seen him race and we were impressed.

I knew Orem had a small museum in the Scera Theatre and finally

found time this spring to make a quick stop there. Ended up spending

1 1/2 hours.

One of the old "loveseats" from the Scera. It was big enough

for two people to sit in. The stool doesn't go with it. I got my

first kiss in the Scera theatre in one of these seats.

Diaorama of the Prisoner of War Camp that was located on Stratton's Farm. I've had

a hard time locating people who remember it. My grandfather talks in his WWII letters

to my dad about having to hire the prisoners because help was so scarce and both

his sons were in the war. My aunt is 80 now and we have photo's of her driving

a tractor in the orchard when she was 14.

I spent many an hour at an "Iron-rite". One of my jobs was keeping 4 brothers shirts

What a wonderful and fun filled day this has been so far. Didn't go to bed until 3 last night and DH started bugging me at 10:30 this morning to "get up". Son called yesterday to tell me that I had received a "jury duty" letter. Gave me the information I needed and so hubby and I are now in the library where I can "fill out my jury questionnaire" online. Except, get this-- the http://www.utcourts.gov/. website won't allow me to fill out my questionnaire if I have Vista or Windows 7 because their system isn't updated yet. Hello-- how long has Vista been out. Sure enough, I can't get to the form on either mine (Vista) or hubby's (W7) computer. So I slip right over to one of the library's permanent computers knowing that they are probably still operating Windows 98 and you guessed it--- they recently updated to Windows 7. The tiny library in the tiny town of Grand Lake, Colorado has a more updated computer system than the State of Utah's Court System. Son, I hope you put that letter in the mail this morning because I'm going to have to do this by snail mail. I could be arrested for non-compliance before I actually get the stupid form filled out. I'm pretty sure from the recording I got on the website that I can postpone it because I'm living out of the State. I really wouldn't mind serving since I've never been called to jury duty before but I want it to work the same as a mission call. I want to go where I want to go and when I want to go. Wish me luck. Mom

A part of my youth. During my teenage years a friend's parents

purchased the small resort. It was considered an inexpensive substitute for the Homestead

a short distance away. They were both based on their natural mineral hot pools. It's interesting because another good friend's family owned the Homestead. But we usually went to Luke's because we could goof-off there and the Homestead allowed no goofing off.

Stephen King could write a book here.

Outdoor Dining Room

In the 40's and 50's many movie stars stayed here. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were regular guests and Virginia Mayo and her husband were good friends of the owners. It was so popular that they sometimes had to put a notice that the facility was closed to the "locals" on specific dates because they were full. They could accomodate about 240 in the dining room.

Kitchen-- Very Stephen King. Something smells really, really bad in the

near vicinity. It's got to be a large animal or ???? Won't look for it right now.

Thought maybe the smell was coming from the large refrigerator or

smaller ice cream dispenser but no-- that wasn't the problem.

Turned around to walk past some cabinets and almost stepped on a

very dead deer carcass. I'll forego showing you the photo.

Piped water from the thermal pools filled both pools. The indoor pool still has water in the bottom of it.

Small algae covered hot springs bubbling out of the ground and running down the

hill in three little streams. Put my finger in it and it is a comfortable warm temperature.

There is a great piece by Aaryn on the Women's Colony about James Patterson the mystery writer. It brought to mind the article in the Times in January's Magazine. Patterson doesn't even write his books. He has a staff of about 30 that turn his brief outline into a horrid, boring, and embarrassing to be seen with "book". If you want a good mystery writer try Thomas Perry and start with "The Butchers Boy". I'm only a snob about two things. My choice of books and ice.

The orgins of Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen).Mary Schmich's "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" was published in the Chicago Tribune as a column on June 1, 1997. In her introduction to the column, she described it as the commencement address she would give if she were asked to give one.The column soon became the subject of an urban legend, in which it was alleged to be an MIT commencement speech given by author Kurt Vonnegut in that same year (in truth, MIT's commencement speaker that year was Kofi Annan). The misattribution became a news item when Vonnegut was contacted by reporters to comment. He told the New York Times, "What she wrote was funny, wise and charming, so I would have been proud had the words been mine."[Despite a follow-up article by Mary Schmich on August 3, 1997, in which she referred to the "lawless swamp of cyberspace" that had made her and Kurt Vonnegut "one", by 1999 the falsely attributed story was widespread.When the column was later turned into a song by Baz Luhrmann, the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing started to play the song Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) at every graduation ceremony.

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who'd rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there's no reason we can't entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen.If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle
Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy.

Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.

Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen

Hey- I'm lucky I can remember where I live.

Highlights:

Abby-- Young Womens Award at 14 when she has until she's 18 to accomplish it. She also had 10 spare minutes a week in her life so she started a book club.

Noah turned two and we used the same cake mold as his Dad's 5th birthday.

A visit to the Dino Museum at Thanksgiving Point was fun and
educational---

And provided a valuable lesson in patience-- ie:

"If you have the patience to wait, everyone else will get

hungry and go home, and you can have the whole sheebang to
yourself" Yea!!!

Haircuts from CookieCutters are very G.Q.

and Worms are Great..............

Grandparents Day was a blast- thanks for the great time J.

And Miss Heather is Get'n Married

Told you the food was good.

And once again Abby proves she is faster than 99.99% of the

5000 + people that enter the Salt Lake Classic 5K by winning

her age division ---again.

Also 2 Baptisms, Easter, and numerous Birthday's. Where
does our family get their energy. Love you all!!!

Almost forgot Grandma's sewer repair which took 5 days
and added 10 years to my life. This is just one of the hole's.

THE BEACH EROSION IS HUGE AFTER THE STORM. IN FRONT OF

THE COMPLEX WE LOST 4-5 FEET OF SAND. THAT'S FEET.

THE BEACH USED TO COME HALF WAY UP THIS ROCK WALL. THEY

WILL BE DREDGING THE HARBOR LATER THIS SPRING WHICH WILL

REPLACE SOME OF THE SAND BUT THE ENTIRE COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO

IS COMPLAINING BECAUSE THERE IS NO MONEY TO SPEND ON SAND

RECOVERY AND ALL THE BEACHES ARE HURTING.

Talked to a lady who was collecting ocean glass and a man with
a geiger counter. He had found a beautiful womans diamond ring
and said it was the 74th ring he had found in the past year. He goes
out 4 days a week. Wendell says "he's probably a widower" and I
said "Naw, he's just retired and his wife is happy he has a hobby".
I'm just glad we are each other's hobby.
Beach erosion goes all the way up to the Strand.

Well, having our bank fail certainly wasn't on our "list of things to do before we die". Being 1400 miles away from our safety deposit box , checking and MMA account, and having our daughter call and ask "don't you bank with Barnes Bank" was a little disconcerting. If she hadn't called I have no idea how long it would have taken us to become aware that we only had 30 days to find a new bank and get our act together.

I have touted Barnes Bank for the last 25 years. I changed my business account to the small Davis County bank after a larger nationwide bank had really p---ed me off. They were wonderful and have continued to be so in the many years since. 3 weeks after I had opened this new account (25 years ago) I had my checkbook stolen and didn't discover the theft until a day later--Saturday around 3 P.M. The bank closed at 2 P.M on Saturday. I frantically called anyway and lo and behold- 1 hour after the bank had closed the branch manager himself answered the phone and immediately put a flag on my account and told me they would watch it carefully, put a stop on all the remaining check numbers and said there would be "no charge". They earned my un-dying love from that point on. They were a small local bank until the housing/development bubble began to expand. They expanded quickly and I was pleased when I could cash a check at a branch in my mothers town when I went to visit her. They ended up with 11 branches statewide. Makes me wonder if they would still be in business if they had remained small and select. Is particularly interesting because the book tape we selected for the drive to California was "Snowball"- Warren Buffett's biography. This man's motto was "If it sounds too good to be true, run like hell." Damn the housing developers and Bush.

Advice-- have one of your children's name on your safety deposit box so you can call and have them postpone their Saturday skiing to run up and clean out your box. Thanks kids for helping us. The highpoint of this day might be the handful of Christmas M & M's I just found in the bottom of my purse.

ONCE AGAIN

Once again we managed to pull off California. It's always fun the first time we check out the beach because it's different every year. Some years the sand is high and smooth -other times it's low and one year it was covered with reeds and debris and stayed that way most of the time we were here. But this year we have beautiful rocks, rocks and more rocks. As we walked the beach I thought "I won't pick up any today because I'll have plenty of time before we leave" but before we got back I had both hands full of rocks that were irresistible

I always look forward to the first trip to the library because the shelves are always full of a great selection of the most current non-fiction books. I was horrified to discover a total of 27 books where in the past the shelves had been full. I quizzed the librarian who ask her supervisor and they both told me "they must be checked out". How dumb do I look. I said "No, you have had a huge budget cut". Finally someone admitted "Yes, we've had a budget cut". Thanks Arnold.

Did find a better selection at Carlsbad Library but still had to come home and order 2 books from Amazon.

Finished out our two day re-entry by driving to Del Mar to see "Crazy Heart" as we start our quest to see all the Academy Award Nominated Movies. Yes, I do know that the nominations aren't out yet but I don't have a problem with that.

Jeff Bridges is incredible.

This evening read an incredibly well written article in the San Diego Reader which is a free news/local magazine that I picked up at the Library. The article starts " I never thought I'd become a Welfare Queen. Poverty does not become me. I'm sure it doesn't become anyone, but it really doesn't become me. I was supposed to be somebody by now, and by that, I mean somebody other than this woman who holds up grocery-store lines with her WIC checks".
